​자비로운 미소 가늘게 감은 눈과 활짝 열린 입,

통통한 볼이 특징으로, 세상의 모든 근심을 잊게

만드는 특유의 호탕하고 자비로운 웃음을 짓고

있습니다.

​풍만하고 거대한 배 풍선처럼 불룩하게

나온 배는 포대화상의 가장 큰 시각적 특징입니다.

민간에서는 이 배를 만지면 복이 오고 재물이

쌓인다는 속설이 있습니다. 배 중앙에는 복을

기원하는 '福(복)' 자 문양이 정교하게 각인되어

있습니다.

​불주머니(포대)와 지팡이 어깨 뒤쪽으로

커다란 자루(포대)를 지팡이에 매어 짊어지고

있는 모습이 묘사되어 있습니다. 이 포대 안에는

중생들에게 나누어 줄 복과 선물이 가득 차 있다고

전해집니다.

​염주와 호리병 목에는 굵은 알로 이루어진

목걸이 형태의 염주를 큼직하게 두르고 있으며,

왼손으로는 무병장수나 복록을 상징하는 호리병

(조이통)을 끈으로 묶어 쥐고 있습니다.
